Explore art and geometry with our Parallelogram Tessellation Pattern Blocks. Children fit 12 parallelograms puzzle-style into the parallelogram base to tessellate different patterns. To tessellate means to cover an area without leaving gaps nor overlapping. Forming tessellations promotes an understanding of geometry as well as artistic development. Our Tessellation Pattern Block sets are unique in that they provide a control for the child. If they do try to leave gaps, the Tessellation Base will not be filled, alerting the child to self-correct their tessellation. In addition, our Tessellation Pattern Blocks are a thick 1/2", instantly alerting a child if they overlap blocks. Children will feel a great sense of satisfaction when they have filled in the entire base. Older children who have a clear understanding of tessellations may abandon the base and move onto the more advanced Tessellation Pattern Cards (Coming Soon!) or free-form exploration.
The Parallelogram Tessellation Pattern Blocks may be used in combination with any of our other Tessellation Pattern Blocks - all have at least one of common length. They may also be used for picture making or other pattern block activities. It is recommended they be used for tessellations first, and after tessellations have been fully explored and mastered, then they be used for picture making. Made from naturally contrasting woods, six of the parallelograms are carved from solid maple and six are carved from solid cherry. Each parallelogram is hand-finished with a food-grade beeswax/oil which protects and enhances the natural beauty of the wood. The base is carved from solid maple.
